An
original Carnforth ‘Totem’ has completed its journey across the Atlantic from
Santa Fe, New Mexico. Richard Gaddes contacted us in December 2012 to ask if we
would like to display it at the Centre and following discussions, its long
journey home was arranged. So how did it finish up in New Mexico? Richard
Gaddes was originally given the totem as a gift to decorate a house in the Lake
District but in 1969, Richard was appointed as Artistic Director of Santa Fe
Opera and both he and it moved abroad. In 1976 Richard established the Opera
Theatre of St Louis and served as its General Director until 1987 when he
became President of the Grand Center of St Louis. Some years later, Richard
rejoined Santa Fe Opera as General Director until his retirement in 2008.
Richard now undertakes consultancy work around the world and frequently judges
international competitions.
